THE OLD OUTDOOR POOL The first owner of the Homestead in 1892 was Melville Ingalls who also happened to be President of C&O railroad. Not coincidentally, C&O installed a 24 mile spur from the main junction in Covington which terminated at a train platform across the street from the hotel. For decades, travelers from around the country would arrive by train for a stay at the resort. From the Virginia Hotel and train platform it was a short walk across what is now Sam Snead Pkway to the baths.
BELOW: In the 1950s a non-heated pool and sun deck were added beside the walk separated by a colonnade. The sandbox and children's pool in the old playground are just visible on the top right.
By the early 1960s travelers had ceased arriving at the Spa by train and the Hot Springs train line was closed in 1970. Sometime before 1996 the sun deck area was grassed over and several years later the pool was filled in. A replacement outdoor pool was later installed on the opposite end of the Spa building. Today, the pool is all but forgotten but the colonnade remains an active entrance to the Spa from the street.
