THE FORMAL GARDENS

One of the more interesting areas at the Old Homestead was the now-lost “Formal Gardens”. These ornamental grounds were situated between the circular drive from the main entrance and the hotel’s South Wing. With a reflecting pool and a three-tiered fountain, these gardens also served as a gateway to the walking trails that encircled the hotel.

In 1923, the Olmsted Brothers, a landscape architecture firm based in Brookline, Massachusetts, were commissioned to design planting plans for the hotel. The gardens were enhanced with numerous cypress trees, boxwood shrubs, and areas of ground cover. Additional landscaping features were introduced, including a columned pergola trellis at the far end of the garden.

Postcards from the 1940s label the area the "Evergreen Gardens" and show an
overgrown appearance while a 1950's photo reveals a more refined look.

Unfortunately around 1973, the site of the Gardens was sacrificed to make way for a modern convention center. The curved entrance to the Homestead was grassed over and a new entrance created several hundred feet up US220 which is now the Sam Snead Parkway. Today, the convention center occupies the exact location of the Formal Gardens leaving nothing of the original surroundings.
